5 December 2023 Ruth Publishes Art Catalog
Professor of Art and Architecture Nick Ruth publishes “Watch This Space,” an art catalog of his recent work.
In his newly released art catalog “Watch This Space,” Professor of Art and Architecture Nick Ruth’s art is on display like never before through photographs and critical essays examining his work.
The cover of “Watch This Space” is Ruth's 2022 screenprint monoprint and colored pencil piece titled This Place X. The work is part of his celebrated This Place series. In 2023, This Place II was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This Place V and an intaglio print titled Farmington Town Hall were acquired by the Print Collection of the New York Public Library. This Place X won a juror’s award at the Made in NY exhibition at the Scweinfurth Museum.
Ruth worked with several HWS colleagues to bring the catalog to life. The main critical essay was written by Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Kathryn Cowles.
“Nick Ruth’s artworks frequently have a kind of built-in temporality, a narrative trajectory of perception that takes place in real time and that consists of rotating stages of looking,” Cowles writes. “…There’s a kind of delight of discovery in the activation of physical perception, feeling, and thinking all at once.”
Additionally, Ruth had help with various series in the catalog from Drew King ’14, Micah Lynch ’18, and Tanner Poisson ’19. Ruth also included photo-documentation of his art by alums Kristine Vann ’18, Jenny Wu ’12 and former HWS photographers Kevin Colton and Greg Searles.
Ruth’s other collaborators include Amze Emmons, Philadelphia-based multimedia artist and Associate Professor at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, editor Emily Mangione and designer Mark Yappueying.
