Through a J.P. Morgan internship, Will Corbett ’25 embarked on a finance journey in NYC this summer.
Economics and computer science double major Will Corbett ’25 worked at J.P. Morgan in New York City this summer, gaining firsthand experience about the investment banking services, mergers and acquisitions, leveraged finance and equity capital markets, as well as the financial transaction process.
“During this internship, I enjoyed the experience and am grateful for the amount of knowledge that I gained every day,” says Corbett, of Monona, Wis.
He believes two courses in particular helped prepare him for the internship: “Macroeconomic Financial Risk and Regulation” with Associate Professor of Economics Evren Damar and “Money and Banking” with Professor of Economics Feisal Khan. “Both of these courses provided me with a great financial background that is necessary in my role this summer.”
In his internship within the financial sponsors group at J.P. Morgan, Corbett assisted private equity firms with various investment banking services. This group supports financial sponsors by helping them raise capital to acquire companies, providing financing, offering financial advice on potential investments, and assisting in the sale of portfolio companies.
Following his internship, Corbett has been offered and accepted a position with J.P. Morgan after graduation next year.
Corbett credits his mentors, Michael Garland '12, Alexander Nugent '15 and Charles Widing '22 for helping guide him throughout the internship.
Prior to his internship, Corbett learned technical skills, including using Adventis, a service providing financial modeling courses and certifications, which "was great for giving me the basics of modeling," says Corbett. He also had to gain deep understandings of what investment banking is and each individual groups role in the process.
During the internship, Corbett learned the appreciation of an industry personality of being competitive, communicating well and have a strong curiosity.
On campus, Corbett is a member of Chimera, Orange Key and Omicron Delta Epsilon honor societies, and serves as a career assistant in the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education. He is also a member of the Finance Society and attended the NYC Finance Career Trek. As a three-year member of the Hobart lacrosse team, Corbett is a two-time Arnold Scholar-Athlete Award winner. He also earned a spot on the 2022 Northeast Conference Commissioner’s Honor Roll for his superior academic work.
“This internship has set me up for success in my future by providing me the necessary knowledge and experience that is vitally important to have in this industry,” Corbett says.
