1 March 2018 • Alums Microbiology and Leading a Life of Consequence
Michael Miller '83, P'09, an internationally renowned microbiologist, will return to the Colleges to discuss his scientific career in a talk titled Microbiology and Leading a Life of Consequence on Friday, March 2 at 4 p.m. in the Geneva Room of the Warren Hunting Smith Library.
"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Miller back to his alma mater," says Associate Professor of Biology Patricia Mowery, who will host Miller during her Microbiology class on Friday morning as well. "Sharing his path from HWS to graduate school to working in industry to becoming a microbiology consultant will show students a model of how to translate what they learn at HWS into an exciting science career."
Miller currently serves as the president of Microbiology Consultants, which develops solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device and other regulated industries. An expert in pharmaceutical microbiology, he is also the founder of Rapid Micro Methods, a comprehensive online guide to innovative practice.
For more than 25 years, Miller has held numerous research and development, manufacturing, quality, business development and executive leadership roles at multinational firms such as Johnson & Johnson, Eli Lilly and Company, and Bausch & Lomb. In his current role, Miller provides technical, quality, regulatory and training solutions in support of rural/metro medical services, sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical manufacturing, contamination control, isolator technology, environmental monitoring, sterilization and antimicrobial effectiveness.
He has authored more than 100 technical publications and presentations and currently serves on the editorial and scientific review boards for American Pharmaceutical Review, European Pharmaceutical Review and the PDA Journal of Science and Technology. He is also an adviser to the United States Pharmaceuticals Modern Microbiological Methods Expert Panel.
Miller holds a Ph.D. in microbiology and biochemistry from Georgia State University. While at HWS, Miller majored in anthropology and sociology, in addition to participating in WEOS and the Jazz Ensemble.
