Melissa Bank ’82 will return to the Hobart and William Smith Colleges campus as a guest speaker for the President’s Forum Lecture Series.
She was also here in 1999, reading from her New York Times bestseller, “A Girl’s Guide to Hunting and Fishing.”
Bank graduated from William Smith in 1982 as an American Studies major and earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiction from Cornell University in 1985.
She has held various jobs as editorial assistant for Putnam Publishing Group as well as copywriter at an advertising agency, McCann Erickson, in New York City.
Her second novel, “The Wonder Spot,” was published by Viking Penguin in June 2005.
In addition to her two highly successful books, Bank received the 1993 Nelson Algren Award for short fiction, and has published stories in Zoetrope, The Chicago Tribune, The North American Review, Other Voices, Ascent.
She also wrote a memoir for The Washington Post: “Alive on Earth — Pretending to be fine has its limitations,” published July 10, 2005. She is now at work writing a screenplay for “A Girl’s Guide” with Francis Ford Coppola and Zoetrope Studios.
Bank’s bestselling novel, spent 16 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was translated into 28 languages. Bank divides her time between New York City and Sag Harbor, N.Y.
