Appointed by President Clinton to his Cabinet in January 1993, Carol Browner is the longest-serving Administrator in the history of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).She partnered with business leaders, community advocates, and government officials to promote solutions to the nation’s most pressing environmental and public health challenges.Most recently, she worked with the auto industry, governors, and public health advocates to develop new clean air standards for vehicles.
Browner accelerated the cleanup of hazardous waste sites, and created the Brownfields program to clean up and redevelop urban properties. She worked to pass the landmark Food Quality Protection Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act.
Prior to leading the EPA, Browner served as the Secretary of Florida’s Department of Environmental Regulation. Earlier, she served as legislative director to then Senator Al Gore, Jr. Browner received her undergraduate degree and law degree from the University of Florida.
