Prior to her current responsibilities, DeWitt was senior editor of ABC "Nightline." And in January 1999, she produced "Found Voices," a broadcast based on the redigitalized interview tapes of ex-slaves made in the 1940s, which won the New York Black Journalists 1st Class Feature Award for 1999. Before entering television, DeWitt was a writer and newspaper correspondent for 20 years, working as a reporter for National Journal; Washington correspondent for The New York Times; and columnist, White House correspondent, foreign correspondent, and assistant national editor of USA Today.
DeWitt has written on a freelance basis for numerous national publications, including National Geographic, Essence, Washingtonian, and Glamour magazines, and has hosted her own cooking show on PBS.
