Rev. Dr. Marvin A. McMickle
In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., political activist and author the Rev. Dr. Marvin A. McMickle gave a talk as part of the President's Forum Speaker Series. His talk, titled "Martin Luther King, Jr. and the Tri-Partite System of Oppression: A 21st Century Assessment," took place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 7, in the Geneva Room.
McMickle currently serves as president of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y., where he also serves as professor of church leadership and director of the Program of Black Church Studies. In a recent lecture in Rochester, McMickle connected King's vision of America with the current debate on immigration and the plight of undocumented people living in the U.S.
Prior to joining Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in 2011, McMickle served for 14 years as the senior pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio. Under his guidance, the church established a ministry for people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS, the first of its kind in the country. He also oversaw ministries in the areas of job training, hunger, addiction and financial assistance, as well as a tithing program in which the congregation annually tithed out 10 percent of its income to the community.
The author of 14 books and dozens of articles that regularly appear in professional journals and magazines, his writings also appear in Feasting on the Word and Preaching God's Transforming Justice. He has served as a visiting professor of preaching at Yale University Divinity School.
