Fall 2020 Opening

Orientation

Are Pre Orientation trips still happening for first year students?

Due to the pandemic, we had to cancel the Pre Orientation Adventure Program for this year.

How many family members may accompany their student for move-in?

We would ask that students generally limit the number of visitors on campus during move-in to two additional adults but we understand that younger siblings may also need to be present. We would ask that families limit the amount of time in the residence hall.

Will there be any first year parent activities during Orientation?

We will hold parent programming via Zoom including multiple events on Thursday, August 20 including a Parents and Families Check-In/Send-Off. We will also hold Zoom sessions throughout the summer to make sure that parents and families have the knowledge they need. We also hope to reschedule Homecoming and Family Weekend during the spring.

Do you expect most of Orientation to be virtual?

Orientation will be a combination of in-person and virtual events. Each Orientation group will be small, with just eight students per group. There will be small, in-person sessions led by Orientation Mentors each day focusing on acquainting students with each other and the HWS community. After lunch, larger sessions will be accommodated via Zoom, and after dinner, small group activities will occur.

If first year students have to move in significantly earlier than the start of classes, how do they acclimate to life at HWS? Do they essentially stick to their residence hall room?

Resident Assistants and Orientation Mentors will be creating floor-based programming, small campus tours and discussion groups during this time.

When will first year students know their class schedules?

First-Year Students will receive their housing assignment and first-year course assignments the week of July 20.

When will Orientation Leaders arrive on campus to be trained for Orientation?

Our Orientation Coordinators have already arrived and are working on planning. Orientation Leaders and Orientation Mentors are beginning to arrive as early as August 1, but most will arrive August 13.

What happens if an incoming first year student is not able to turn in their medical information on time because of COVID-19?

Any first year student having any trouble filling out any paperwork or completing necessary tasks in anticipation of the fall semester, should call the Office of Orientation at (315) 781-3041 or email orientation@hws.edu.
