Shayna Riggins ’22 landed an advertising internship at Merkley & Partners in New York City for the summer of 2021. As a Media and Society major and Spanish and Africana Studies double-minor, Riggins believes the position will be “an amazing opportunity for hands-on experience in the advertising industry.”
Riggins learned of the opening with help from the Salisbury Center for Career Services and Experiential Education and Merkley & Partner’s CEO Alex Gellert ’86. In the seat, Riggins will be responsible for research and special workshops and projects, in addition to shadowing in multiple departments throughout the company.
She believes her classwork and professors helped prepare her. She notes her “Global Cinema” class, taught by Associate Professor of Media and Society Lisa Patti, introduced her to a “better sense of branding.” Professor of Media and Society Linda Roberston’s “Intro to Media & Society” highlighted the “risks of advertising and the amount of influence [advertising] has on society.” She says she plans to remain cognizant of the messages behind any of her future advertising projects.
On campus, Riggins serves as media coordinator with the Caribbean Student Association and as an ambassador with the Center for Global Education. She also attended the Behind the Scenes experience in Los Angeles in January coordinated by the Salisbury Center.
In addition to working at Sodexo for the past two years, Riggins held internships in high school where she worked with the marketing firm Huge Inc. and in the office of Congressman José Serrano (D-NY).
