Julianne Rizzotti ’17 gained firsthand experience in state government and politics during an internship working for the First Lady of New Jersey Mary Pat Christie in the Office of the First Lady and Protocol.
Working with the First Lady’s chief of staff, Rizzotti was responsible for managing the schedule for the First Lady and family, creating press releases, drafting letters and event planning. In addition, she served as a liaison for three nonprofits led by the First Lady: Drumthwacket Foundation, New Jersey Heroes and Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund.
“I gained valuable experience. I believe that learning the ins and outs of the state office has been important as a student and citizen of the United States,” says Rizzotti, a political science major.
During her work as a liaison for the nonprofits, Rizzotti had the opportunity to connect with state leaders, create social media posts, write announcements and biographies. “The nonprofits that Mrs. Christie heads in the community are important in honoring the history of the state, recognizing the great people who make up the community, and helping those in the state who are in need,” Rizzotti says.
The First Lady’s office is housed under the Office of the Governor of New Jersey, led by former presidential hopeful Chris Christie. Rizzotti assisted in organizing the family’s trip to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as a visit to Italy.
Rizzotti says among the highlights of her internship was the opportunity to attend events hosted by the Governor and First Lady. She also met former New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne during a Drumthwacket Foundation gala.
Previously, Rizzotti worked as a marketing intern with Lincoln Investment and held internships in the U.S. House of Representatives with the Office of Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and the Office of House Majority Whip Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana.
At HWS, Rizzotti is a Writing Colleague and a campus correspondent for Her Campus. She also has served as an Orientation Mentor, worked in the Office of Admissions and is a student coordinator for Leadership Institute 2017.
