Salazar ’20 Garners League Praise

Hobart College senior goalie Brian Salazar was tabbed the Liberty League Men’s Soccer Defensive Performer of the Week by the conference office today ahead of a key non-conference tilt for the Statesmen.

The Statesmen were 2-0-0 in non-conference contests last week. Salazar did not allow a goal in 172 minutes of action as he improved to 5-1-0 on the season. On Wednesday, he made four saves as Hobart defeated Potsdam 1-0. Salazar followed that up with a three save performance against Geneseo on Saturday. He has played all but eight minutes in goal this season, recording a 0.66 goals against average and a .875 save percentage with a pair of shutouts. Salazar leads the Liberty League with a .875 save percentage.

The Statesmen (5-1-0), who received votes in the last week’s United Soccer Coaches poll, will host 11th-ranked Cortland on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m. on Cozzens Field. Juniors Pete Critchlow and Kyle Mangold share the team lead with five points. Critchlow has a team-high three assists this season. Mangold has scored twice and leads the team with two game-winning goals.  Junior Liam Born shares the team lead with two goals.

The Red Dragons bring a 4-1-0 overall record into tomorrow’s contest. Cortland is coming off a 3-2 victory over St. Lawrence on Saturday. After falling behind 1-0, the Red Dragons rattled off three unanswered goals to knock off the Saints. Anthony Ruggiero leads the team with four goals, including three game winners. Miguel Tunas is right behind him with six points on two goals and two assists. He is one of three Cortland players with two assists. Sean Kelly has played a majority of the minutes in goal for Cortland. He is 2-1-0 with a 1.00 GAA and a .769 save percentage.

Fans who cannot make it to Cozzens Field can follow all the action with Live Stats and HWS All-Access Video. The game will also be broadcast live on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
