The Hobart and William Smith lacrosse teams pulled off big wins last weekend. The Herons defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 14-11 on RIT’s Turf Field on March 1 in its Liberty League opener. The next day, the Statesmen used an impressive third quarter to pull away from Binghamton University, posting a 16-7 non-conference victory at Bearcats Sports Complex.
Ellie Burns ’21 led the way for the Herons (1-0, 1-0) with four first half goals. Bizzer Gahagan ’20 added three points on two goals and an assist. Mekayla Montgomery ’21 had two goals for William Smith. Montgomery won a career-high eight draws and scooped up four ground balls. Olivia Hoffmann ’21 made a career-high eight saves in goal. The Herons finished the game with a 33-27 edge in shots and a 35-20 edge in ground balls. William Smith was 15-of-18 clearing the ball and RIT was 14-of-24.
On March 2, the Statesmen improved to 3-1 on the young season. Faceoff specialist Matthew Pedicine ’19 continued his dominant ways, winning 19-of-26 faceoffs and scooping up a game-high 15 ground balls. Nine Statesmen factored into the scoring, led by senior Chris Aslanian’s six-point day on two goals and four assists. On the defensive end of the field, Sam Lucchesi ’20 made a season-high 14 saves to earn the win in goal. During the game, the Statesmen fired off a season-high 66 shots, the most since taking 70 against Lehigh University in 2002.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, March 9. The Herons will face off against Nazareth College at noon in Rochester, N.Y., and the Statesman will take on the University of Vermont in New Canaan, Conn., at 2 p.m.
