Statesmen Open Boston Tournament

The eighth-ranked Hobart College hockey team returns to the ice this weekend, Jan. 4-5, when it travels to Boston for the 2020 Boston Landing Tournament. The Statesmen will open the tournament on Saturday, when they take on Saint John’s University at 3 p.m. at Warrior Ice Arena.

The host, Nichols, will take on Bryn Athyn in Saturday’s other game at 6 p.m. The winners will advance to the championship game on Sunday, Jan. 5, at 6 p.m. The consolation game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. Fans unable to make the trip can follow the action with Live Stats and Video.

Hobart wrapped up 2019 with a 7-3-1 overall record thanks to a 4-2 victory over No. 2 Trinity on Dec. 11. The Statesmen are 3-3-0 in the New England Hockey Conference and currently sit in seventh place in the conference standings. Hobart’s offense has been firing on all cylinders to start the season. The Statesmen are ranked eighth in the nation, averaging 4.18 goals per game. Hobart also ranks among the nation’s best in scoring margin (7th, + 2.09), penalty kill (8th, 91.1%), scoring defense (13th, 2.09), and winning percentage (22nd, .682).

The Statesmen have relied on their depth this season to score 46 goals. Eighteen different players have scored at least one goal and 24 different players have recorded at least a point. Senior Lawson MacDougall leads the team with 12 points on four goals and eight assists. Junior Alec Robitaille leads the team with five goals. Junior Mike Faulkner has a team-high nine assists. Sophomore Joe Halstrom has played every minute in goal and is 7-3-1 overall with a .916 save percentage and a 2.07 goals against average.

The Johnnies bring a 2-4-4 overall record into the weekend. Saint John’s was edged by Concordia 7-5 on Dec .15 to conclude 2019. The Johnnies are 23rd in the nation, averaging 3.50 goals per game. Kyle Wagner leads the team with 11 points on three goals and eight assists. Davis Kirkendall leads SJU with six goals. Wagner and Jake Dittel share the team lead with eight assists. Andrew Lindgren and Mac Berglove have split time in goal. Lindgren is 1-3-2 with a 2.90 GAA and a .910 save percentage and Berglove is 1-1-2 with a 2.65 GAA and a .913 save percentage.

Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the Statesmen and the Johnnies.

Nichols brings a 1-9-0 overall record into the weekend. J.B. Baker leads the team with seven assists and 10 points. Vincent Crivello has a team high four goals. Four different goalies have seen time for Nichols. Brett Epp has played a majority of the minutes. He is 0-4-0 with a 4.95 GAA and a .851 save percentage.

Bryn Athyn brings a 6-4-2 overall record into 2020. The Lions are led offensively by Devon Becker’s seven goals, nine assists and 16 points. Nikita Smirnov is second on the team with 10 points on six goals and four assists. McKenzie Chalmers has played a majority of the minutes in goal. He is 3-2-1 overall with a 2.84 GAA and a .898 save percentage.
