At the New York and Hong Kong offices of Colliers International, Josh Walker ’20 is not only seeing how global real estate deals are negotiated and rubberstamped — he’s working to make the deals possible.
Walker, who earned a 2018 Charles H. Salisbury Summer International Internship Stipend, says he has gained “immense experience and insight” while shouldering “a great amount of responsibility” as a commercial real estate intern with the global company real estate corporation.
“Before coming to Colliers I had a very basic understanding of the commercial real estate industry,” he says, but “once I walked through those glass doors at the New York office I was flooded with information.”
In New York, Walker was “a sponge soaking up information,” sitting in on meetings and phone calls and learning from real estate experts “who handle million dollar leasing deals on a daily basis,” including Alex Jinishian ’76, Colliers New York vice chairman, who mentored Walker.
At the Hong Kong office, Walker says he “had to learn an entirely different real estate market and way of business,” but he was given important assignments immediately, “canvassing buildings, cold calling to develop new business, going to client meetings, and office space inspections.”
A double-major in computer science and media studies, Walker says that with tech and media companies among the fastest growing in the world, “having both an understanding of their industry and what you can do for them within the real estate industry can give you a major advantage.”
And he looks forward to putting his unique background to work after this “eye-opening and life-altering” summer. Between his academic interests and the experience, he’s developed conducting market research, pursuing new commercial opportunities and leading client meetings at Colliers, Walker says he “really can envision being successful in this industry in the upcoming years.”
Created in 2007 by Honorary Trustee Charles H. Salisbury Jr. ’63, P’94, L.H.D.’08, the Salisbury Stipend is one of the most ambitious programs in the Colleges’ history. The program provides financial support for travel, lodging and expenses for students interested in pursuing an international internship experience in a location of the student’s choice. By supplementing classroom education with professional experience, students gain a practical understanding of the demands and rewards of future career opportunities as well as an opportunity to test their skills and realize their potential.
