Hobart LAX Opens with a Win

Senior attackman Ryan Archer scored a career-high four goals to lead Hobart College to a 13-9 Northeast Conference win over Mount St. Mary’s University to open the 2021 lacrosse season. The Syracuse native matched his career-high with seven points as the Statesmen rallied from a 7-5 halftime deficit on Stiles Field in the Poole Family Sports Dome.

Archer scored all four of his goals and recorded two of his three assists after halftime. Junior attackman Jason Knox added a hat trick. Sophomore faceoff specialist Adam Shea was 15-of-21 at the X with a game-high 11 ground balls. Sophomore goalie Kevin Holtby made 16 saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start.

Senior attackman Brendan Doyle led the Mountaineers (1-5, 0-1) with four points on a goal and three assists. Senior midfielder Luke Frankeny, senior attackman Brenden McCarthy and senior midfielder Sam Stephan each scored two goals. Stephen was 8-of-21 on faceoffs and picked up a team-high six ground balls. Senior goalie Dylan Furnback also recorded 16 saves.

With the game tied at 7 early in the third quarter, Archer scored all four of his goals in succession, giving Hobart an 11-9 lead with just over six minutes to go in the game. Archer briefly gave the Statesmen the lead with his first goal, but Frankeny answered to knot the game at 8. Archer finished a feed from sophomore attackman Troy Barthelme two minutes later, but again Frankeny countered with a man-up goal to tie the game for the fifth and final time.

Archer scored the last goal of the third quarter to give the Statesmen the lead for good. With 6:12 remaining in the game, Archer netted his final goal, using a slick swim move to beat his long-pole defender and then fired a laser just under the crossbar for an 11-9 lead. Hobart first-year attackman Anthony Dattellas added two more goals in the final five minutes to wrap up the victory.

Hobart’s dominant second half, helped them overcome an uneven opening 30 minutes. The Statesmen, who were playing their opener against a Mount squad playing its sixth game of the year, took a 2-0 lead on goals by Knox and junior midfielder Bradley Simas. The Mountaineers claimed their first lead with three goals in under a minute. Doyle, Stephan and McCarthy each hit the back of the net in a span of just 53 seconds. Knox scored his second goal in the final minute of the opening quarter to tie the game.

A 4-1 run by the visitors gave them a 7-4 lead with four minutes to go in the half. Stephan capped the run with his second goal. Both were scored off of his faceoff wins with a quick dash to the cage. Junior midfielder Derrek Madonna closed out the first half scoring with his first of two goals in the game.

At the half, the Mount had a 24-18 edge in shots and had the advantage in clearing. MSM was 8-of-9 clearing in the first 30 minutes, while riding the Statesmen on 4-of-12. In the second half, Hobart outshot its guest 35-26, had an 18-14 edge in ground balls, and won 9-of-11 faceoffs. The Statesmen also improved their clearing to 6-of-7 after the break.

Hobart will return to action on Saturday, March 13, when it travels to play LIU. The Mount will stay on the road, looking to end a five-game slide, when it visits Bryant on March 13.
