Media and Society Student Ambassadors Program

  • The Media and Society Student Ambassadors Program connects outstanding Media and Society majors and minors with prospective majors and minors. Ambassadors meet with prospective students who are visiting HWS during Admissions events, sharing their experiences as students in the Media and Society Program and offering insights about how the program has helped them to discover and pursue their academic and professional goals. Ambassadors also meet with current HWS students who are exploring the major and minor. Ambassadors serve as peer advisors and mentors during individual and group advising meetings. They offer advice about course selections within the major, study abroad programs that fit well with the major, and internship and networking opportunities.

    The Media and Society program has allowed me to truly explore my lifelong interests. I have always been fascinated by the ways that culture, history, and politics shape the development of media, and are increasingly being shaped by it in turn. Because of the interdisciplinary freedom that MDSC offers, I can wholeheartedly say that every class I’ve taken has been one I sought out and cherished. Besides expansive and thought provoking core classes like Introduction to Media and Society, Information and Influence and Global Television, I’ve had the chance to study video game music, feminist rhetorics, and modern Chinese art. Outside the program, I serve as a Writing Colleague, edit The Herald student newspaper and have involved myself in HWS Debate and Students for Humanitarian Justice.

    In the MDSC program, I’ve examined visual media as an art form, a cultural influence/indicator, and as a set of powerful industries. Classes like Global Television, Film Editing and Comedy in Action make me truly excited to get up in the morning. They have given me incredible opportunities to produce my own projects, meet with industry professionals and even travel to Freiburg, Germany, last summer! At HWS, I’m also a member of the Debate team, a writer for The Herald student newspaper, a Teaching Assistant for the MDSC department, a WHWS radio co-host and an admissions tour guide.

    During my time in the Media and Society program, I have successfully completed my first short film, reinstated the HWS Film Club, and studied deeply how modern media interacts with business strategies. Keeping my passion for the visual arts has been easy with this program because of its interdisciplinary nature, something that is often overlooked. I find myself always inspired to create, and am thankful for what this department has done for me professionally and socially.

    Through the MDSC program, I have been able to explore the interaction between our world and the media through an interdisciplinary curriculum. I most enjoy learning about marketing and advertising techniques while exploring how we as humans interact with the media daily. This major has allowed me to hone my interests while also having the opportunity to explore new avenues—always guided by extensive support and encouragement. On campus, I am a Writing Colleague, I work for the Office of Admissions, and I am the First Year Liaison on the board for Hillel. I plan to study abroad in London next spring, and I intend to pursue a career in editorial magazine journalism.

    What I like most about the MDSC program is the many pathways you can take in terms of careers. The program is incredibly flexible and malleable to what fits best for me. I would like to have a career in sports media/photography, and the MDSC program has many opportunities for me to do get experiences in both those areas. For sports photography, I’ve submitted some photos for a class as a project. The MDSC program has given me amazing opportunities to find what I love to do not only in campus life but in my work life as well.

    The media and society department has provided me the opportunity to explore my interests in politics, public policy, videography and digital media through various courses. Media has been shaped drastically in recent years and is now vital to news, education and communication within mass groups of people. This department has allowed me to fuse media from various parts and people and connect it to the way we as a society function and develop culture together.

    My favorite part about Media and Society is the variety of media, cultures, and different marketing techniques we learn along the way. I have learned so much regarding advertisement, cultures, and understanding certain trends in society. This major has broadened my perspective on not just media and society but the different tools I will be able to use in life that I have learned from the major. At HWS, I am a member of the Hobart football team and a teaching assistant for the major.

    The MDSC program has allowed me to explore my passions at HWS and has opened up so many opportunities for me. My favorite part of the major is its flexibility with other departments here at HWS, making it super compatible with an array of majors/minors. I've really enjoyed the diversity within the major which includes advertising, media studies, film studies, video production, animation and so much more. In addition to my studies I work in the Athletic Communications Department where I film, edit and produce highlights for our great sports teams!
