Admissions VP Young Named Honorary Brother of Kappa Sigma

This spring, Kappa Sigma fraternity initiated Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admissions John Young as an honorary member.

Vice President for Enrollment and Dean of Admissions John Young has served as advisor of the Delta-Phi Chapter of Kappa Sigma for the past five years. In honor of his mentorship and support of Hobart students, the fraternity welcomed Young into its ranks as an honorary brother this spring.

Young “has served as an incredible mentor to countless Brothers throughout his tenure…and exemplifies all that we know and love about Kappa Sigma,” Mac Benson ’18 wrote in the chapter’s spring newsletter. Young was an important resource for the chapter, “routinely meeting with Brothers, checking up on their grades, making sure they weren’t falling behind, and simply being an ear to listen to any problems.”

Young, who was named Vice President and Dean of Admissions in June 2018, is responsible for leading the Colleges’ admissions and financial aid teams.

“John was the on-campus father figure that many of us needed,” says Evan Mextorf ’18, now assistant project manager at Shawmut Design and Construction in New York. “When there were challenges I faced on campus, John was the first person I would turn to. Sometimes it’s not easy to admit to your parents that you’ve made a mistake academically, but you need guidance on how to move forward. John always made himself available and provided straightforward advice on how to right the ship…I’m incredibly grateful to be able to call him a mentor, a friend and now brother.”

Young has been involved in several admissions professional organizations, most significantly the New York State Association for College Admissions Counseling. He presents regularly at high schools across the country on a variety of topics and is a speaker at the Summer Institute for new admissions officers and college counselors. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history at Colgate University and, prior to his arrival at HWS, worked on the admissions staffs at Colgate and Skidmore College.

Beginning the fall, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies Craig Talmage will assume the role of faculty advisor for Kappa Sigma.
