As a first-year at HWS, I originally wanted to be a psychology major. I took “Intro to Psychology and Social Psychology” but as soon as I began the “Intro to Media and Society” course, I knew I wanted to switch majors. When it came to searching for internships, I made sure to schedule appointments with former Associate Director Erin Brockway and Director of the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education Brandi Ferrara. Not only did they help me spruce up my resume, create business cards, and conduct a few mock interviews but I went to their seminars for job shadowing, networking and traveled to New York City for the Media Day networking events. They are an excellent resource.
During my senior year, I was looking for job opportunities after graduation like many of my peers. Based on my previous internships, I knew I wanted to work in marketing and communications and stay in New York City. Besides the resources in Career Services, I also was a part of an organization called Basta. The Founder, Sheila Sarem, and I spoke weekly to identify my goals, continue to build my resume, work on mock interviews, and overall gain general feedback about the job search process. I looked for jobs everywhere from the HWS opportunities sent over email to Indeed.com. Finally, I found a marketing and communications paid internship with Cognac One, a wine importer and distributor, and shortly after my interview, I got the job. Following the summer internship, I received a full-time position as a marketing and communications assistant, which I presently hold.
In addition, I do some part-time marketing and artist development work for Sensu Music, a start-up music tech company. In the future, I hope to continue on the path of music marketing and working with Sensu. My original interest in music marketing began at HWS when my friend and classmate Richard “Ricky” Runfola ’17 (a freelance artist) and I were the founders of the SoundShare (previously recognized as the HWS EDM Collective), and my time on the Concert Advisory Committee. These organizations helped me visualize my passion for the business side and see the behind the scenes work involved with putting concerts together.
