William Smith College first-year Michaelann Denton was named the ECAC Upstate Women’s Tennis Rookie of the Week late yesterday by the conference office. This is the second straight week that Denton has been recognized by the ECAC.
Denton, who was also tabbed Liberty League Rookie of the Week for the second straight week, went a perfect 3-0 last week, playing at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. On Thursday, in a 5-4 loss to Ithaca, she defeated Allison Vizgaitis 7-6 (7-0), 6-0 at No. 3. Against Bard, Denton did not lose a single game, defeating Beryl Taylor 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Sunday, at Union, she emerged victorious 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.
Last night, against Hamilton, Denton notched the Herons’ lone singles win at No. 3. She bested Isabella Schoning, 6-4, 6-3, to improve to 19-2 in singles play. Denton ended her rookie campaign on a 17-match winning streak, posting a perfect 17-0 mark this spring. She also recorded 13 doubles wins this season. Paired with junior Sydney Arsenault she went 8-3, ending the season on a seven-match win streak.
William Smith finished its 2014-15 campaign with a 9-9 overall record.
