Equestrian Club on Path to Nationals

At regionals, the HWS Equestrian Club had its top finish in program history.

The HWS Equestrian Club had a competitive showing at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association Regionals. After winning her class in both open fences and open flats, Mary Mazzarella ’22 will advance to Zones in April, a statewide level horse show. As a team, HWS Equestrian finished in sixth place, the highest finish in the program’s history.

Mazzarella also won the U.S. Equestrian/ Cacchione Cup, a prestigious award that goes to the National Individual Hunter Seat High-Point Rider. If Mazzarella competes well in April, she could be one of two qualifiers to advance to the National Championship.

Mazzarella was joined at the competition by Cayden Smith ’24, a novice flat rider, who finished in fourth place.

The competition was hosted by Alfred University at the Bromeley-Daggett Equestrian Center. Other competitors in Zone 2, Region 1 included students from Cornell University, Ithaca College and the Rochester Institute of Technology.

To ensure an equal playing field among all competitors, IHSA randomly pairs riders with a horse provided by host colleges.

HWS Equestrian Club was founded in 2008 in partnership with Sarah Donahue of Wynn Farms in Lima, N.Y. The club has eight members, who compete in open fences/open flat, intermediate fences/intermediate flat, limit fences/limit flat, novice flat and introductory.

The club brings together students with a common love for horses and respect for the traditions of equestrian sport. The goal is to provide an opportunity for all students, regardless of skill, to improve horsemanship skills, prepare for shows, make memories and have fun by uniting the recreation of a club sport with the competition of a varsity team.

“The bond that the team has is like no other, every new member that we get always instantly clicks. It is nice to share in something so fun,” Mazzarella reflects.

The Equestrian Club is holding a fundraiser through April 15, 2022 to pay for travel and board expenses on the road to nationals. Enter their raffle to win a selection of wines from Ravine’s Vineyard. Contact equestrianclub@hws.edu or Venmo @hwsequestrian to participate.
