This award provides employment opportunities in various campus offices. Students are paid at an hourly rate and receive paychecks every two weeks. Earnings are to be used to meet college charges, as well as provide for personal expenses.
Most students work between 8 and 10 hours a week and, on average, earn from $300 to $2,000 a year. Students are responsible for seeking out their own campus job opportunities. Those eligible for federal work study have priority during the first two weeks of each semester to secure a position. After that, the positions are available to all students. Only federal work study eligible students may work in the America Reads and America Counts programs.
Once you have secured a work study position, you must complete all necessary forms in the Office of Human Resources in Gulick Hall before your first day of work. Be sure to bring proper identification to show proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States. You will need these in order to complete your I-9. A list of acceptable documents can be found online. Employment forms must be completed prior to working on campus.
Statement of Federal Work Study Awards
The Federal Work-Study Program reimburses employers for 75% of the students’ earnings up to the amount of the award (initial or adjusted). Any wages earned after that amount must be paid 100% by the employer. It is the responsibility of the student and the supervisor to monitor earnings to be sure the award amounts are not exceeded.
At Hobart and William Smith, we offer a variety of employment options for students, including office positions, lab assistant positions and fundraising positions. The Office of Human Resources regularly posts positions available on campus on its webpage. Each job posted will include information about the job responsibilities, pay rate, job location, supervisor and application instructions. You will also find information regarding the hiring process, which includes verifying your work eligibility.
