Writing and Rhetoric major and Statesman sailor Aidan Morgan ’21 has secured an internship with ESPN Radio in Ithaca, N.Y., an affiliate that covers such national and local teams as the New York Yankees, Syracuse Orange, Cornell Big Red, Ithaca Bombers and Cortland Red Dragons.
Morgan, who plans to pursue a career in sports media after graduation, will conduct research and edit segments for the station’s shows. The internship also allows for some personalization so that Morgan can focus on specific aspects of show development depending on his interests as the semester progresses.
“I am hoping to learn more about the production side of ESPN through this internship and what goes on behind the scenes of what we see on the screen and radio,” says Morgan, who previously held internships as a sports writer for isportsweb.com, Sail1Design and FanSided. “Those internships required extensive researching and analysis, as well as numerous articles that were on a set schedule.”
Morgan credits his classwork and professors as integral to preparing him for the position. “The classes that I have taken with Professor of Writing and Rhetoric Cheryl Forbes, such as ‘Feature Sports Writing’ and two sports writing independent studies, have given me a work ethic that has stuck with me since the first day and will stick with me for a lifetime. Professor Forbes’ dedication to helping me become not only a great writer, but also a great researcher is something that I am thankful for,” he says.
Emmy award winning sports analyst for NBC Pierre McGuire ’83 also has assisted him since his sophomore year. “Pierre McGuire has helped with such things as getting in contact with NBC Sports Washington as well as been so gracious to let me interview him multiple times for articles and papers I have written.”
The Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education initially helped Morgan find the position. “[Director] Brandi Ferrara told me about this opportunity after I discussed with her my interest of going into the sports media business. She then reached out to her contact at ESPN Radio, introducing me in the process,” Morgan says.
Morgan is pursuing a minor in media and society.
