5 December 2016 Mosaic NY Fall 2016

Directed by Associate Professor of Theatre Heather May, Mosaic NY a student theatre company focused on promoting dialogue, developing community, celebrating diversity, and encouraging the pursuit of social justice began the semester with several new performances during Orientation 2016 and has begun preparing for shows later this fall.

The opening performance was designed to connect with the Classes of 2020 and engage them in issues of importance on campus, including addressing award-winning writer Claudia Rankines book Citizen, this years common read for all incoming first-year students.

Currently, Mosaic NY is working on a performance piece for Safe Harbors' Shine the Light event to raise awareness about domestic violence. The performance will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Penn Yan Fire Department and will be followed by a walk to end domestic violence. The entry fee is a donation of hygiene items.

The theatre company will also perform Thursday, Nov. 10 at 5:30 p.m. in McDonald Theatre of the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts. Free and open to the public, the event will be followed by an open discussion with the audience. The Nov. 10 performance will highlight pieces related to Citizen in advance of Rankine's visit to campus on Wednesday, Nov. 30.

This year, Mosaic NY welcomes back four returning members: Justin Tacuri 17, Luis Figueroa 18, Lauryn Downing 17 and Samantha Shaffner 17. About the company: A mosaic is defined as a picture or pattern produced by arranging together small colored pieces of hard material. In a mosaic, all of the pieces maintain their integrity individually but are enriched by those that surround them. Mosaic NY embodies this definition; its members are a diverse group of students from different backgrounds, cultures, races and areas of study that reflect the values and liberal arts education of the Colleges. In the Mosaic NY company, students collaborate to create all of the materials they perform.
