14 October 2016 William Smith Seniors Participate with Avon 39

Alexandra Baird 17, Elizabeth Barnard 17, Madeleine Booth 17, Lucy Carr 17, Maddy Kapp 17, Gabrielle Steinhardt 17 and Grace Thompson 17 are participating in The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Manhattan this weekend.

The 39.9-mile walk is a fund raising event to benefit breast cancer research and awareness for an organization called Avon 39. The organization provides assistance and care for families who are battling breast cancer and also funds breast cancer screenings and other treatments.

With a shared passion for charity and giving back, the William Smith seniors targeted breast cancer awareness because of their intimate connection with the disease. Breast cancer impacts so many, and the fact that we could raise money for research allows us to help, Carr says.

Introduced to the event through her mother in 2009, Kapp participated in the event in high school and organized the William Smith team called Hooters Worth Saving with her closest classmates.

The group has exceeded their goal of $20,000 through friends, families and others and this weekend they will continue to strive for additional donations.

The students weve been in touch with and who have donated to The Avon Walk care about the cause just as much as we do, says Kapp. We all agree that the curriculum and values that weve learned throughout our journey at HWS have helped us join together as an even stronger team.
