9 September 2016 HWS Ranks 17th for Best College Radio
Hobart and William Smiths college radio station has been ranked 17th in the nation by Princeton Review. The ranking appears in The Best 381 Colleges 2017 and is based on student survey results which solely determined which schools make the list and at what rank. Students answered the question: How popular is the college radio station?
The HWS radio station, home of WEOS 89.5FM, 90.3FM and WHWS 105.7FM, ranks alongside schools like Bates College, Brown University, Carleton College, Emerson College, Franklin & Marshall College and Syracuse University.
"We are thrilled to be recognized in this way," says Station Manager Greg Cotterill, who has been with the station for 14 years. "For the past decade, we've focused on ensuring that the station is providing incredible opportunities and experiences for our students, whether they are working at the station or listening. I'm grateful to all of the listeners on campus and in the region, and to the many who volunteer to make the station a success."
Broadcasting live from the Scandling Campus Center at the heart of campus, the Colleges state-of-the-art radio station is equipped with three recording studios, two of which air simultaneously. One recording room has an observatory window through which students may watch and listen to interviews, sports, news or arts being broadcast daily. The HWS radio station employs a number of students who gain significant experience in everything from broadcasting and hosting their own shows to announcing games and connecting with other stations around the world.
Started by HWS students in 1947, WEOS, also known as Finger Lakes Public Radio, is broadcast on 90.3 FM to the town of Geneva, and on 89.5 to the surrounding Finger Lakes region. Through a partnership with WXXI Public Broadcasting in Rochester, N.Y., WEOS programming includes National Public Radio with a focus on talk shows and news, live local concerts, lectures and discussions, as well as all Hobart football and lacrosse games. All WEOS sports broadcasts are also streamed live at www.weos.org.
WHWS is broadcast on 105.7 and is primarily run by HWS students, as well as local volunteers. The station has a variety of programs, including 100 watts of college radio broadcasting music with students and local DJs. WHWS also broadcasts all HWS home sports games, and both home and away games for William Smith lacrosse, all of which are streamed live atwww.whws.fm.
In 2014, the HWS radio station moved to its new home in the Scandling Campus Center after being located on Hamilton Street since the mid-1990s. Students who are interested in getting their own radio show or who simply want to be involved with the station can contact Cotterill at cotterill@hws.edu.
As part of Princeton Reviews The Best 381 Colleges 2017, Hobart and William Smith were also ranked seventh in the nation for study abroad opportunities and global programming.
