1 February 2019 • ArtsFaculty Spelling Bee Fundraiser for Literacy

Members of the Hobart and William Smith community are preparing for the 17th annual Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates (LVOY) Spelling Bee, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Geneva High School. Proceeds from the event will fund important literacy initiatives in the region.

HWS will be represented by B+, a team of faculty members including Professor or Art and Architecture Lara Blanchard, Associate Professor of Classics Leah Himmelhoch and Professor of Biology Beth Newell. Last year, the HWS faculty and staff team won first place at the competition and an HWS student team took third, collectively raising $800 for the agency.

This year, the B+ team hopes to raise $300 for an entry fee into the friendly competition. The money will support the mission of LVOY, which has offered free and confidential one-on-one tutoring to adults who want to improve their reading, writing and English-speaking skills in Ontario and Yates counties since 1967.

Donations can be made via check to “LVOY” and sent to Newell through campus mail. Newell will also accept checks or cash at the February faculty meeting. To support the HWS team, members of the HWS community are invited to attend the competition which will be held in the Geneva High School auditorium. The fundraiser will also include a bake sale and a used book sale.

Newell can be reached at newell@hws.edu for questions regarding donations. To learn more about Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates, visit their website.
