4 January 2022 McMahon ’23 Receives Internship at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation

Economics major and Heron lacrosse player, Payton McMahon ’23 is gearing up for an internship at a multinational banking company this summer.

Payton McMahon ’23 has landed an internship on the subscription finance team at Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC), a multinational banking and financial services company based in Japan. She will work at its New York City office.

In her role, McMahon will aid the subscription finance team in choosing loans to distribute to several highly competitive funds, mainly consisting of private equity funds.

“As I go into this summer, I feel as though I don’t know what I don’t know and I can’t wait to soak up as much information as possible to aid me in my final year at HWS and post-grad in my professional career,” says McMahon, an economics major. “I want to learn as much as possible, network with as many people as possible, and gain hands-on experience on transactions.”

McMahon says her studies have given her a strong academic foundation and helped her “develop a deep understanding of the economy and the financial system. The professors and their classes have given me confidence that I will be successful in my role this summer,” says McMahon.

As a member of the William Smith lacrosse team, she credits the Athletics Department with preparing her for leadership opportunities.

“Through lacrosse, I have held a number of leadership roles and sat on many leadership committees. I’ve developed a number of skills that have proven to be useful on the field, in the classroom and in other aspects of my life,” says McMahon. “The HWS Athletic Department, and certainly the William Smith lacrosse team, is driven by hard work which is something that has been engrained in me during my time here and it will certainly aid my work this summer.”

Next semester, McMahon will study abroad in Lisbon, Portugal.

McMahon says the staff at the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education also encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone and “reach out to alums for career advice, insight and opportunities.” From there, McMahon was able to network with an array of alums and other financial professionals.

“Having an experience on the subscription finance team this summer means so much to me,” says McMahon. “It makes all of my hard work for the past three years at HWS worth every second.”
