27 January 2023 Exploring Finance in NYC
During winter break, Hobart and William Smith students explored careers and met with alums in the financial sector during the New York City Wall Street Experience program hosted by the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education.
From Jan. 9-11, students attended presentations and tours at financial institutions such as HSBC, Bloomberg, Barclays, Goldman Sachs and JP Morgan.
Led this year by Shayne Feinberg P'17, P'20, the associate director of employer development and engagement for the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education, the NYC Wall Street Experience is an extended networking opportunity that draws industry professionals from the HWS community and recruiters from their companies who meet with HWS students, share experiences and advice, and assist with career preparation and planning.
Since its inception, the Salisbury Center’s immersive networking experience has offered a crucial steppingstone for students to begin their careers in the industry, with students and graduates landing internships and then full-time positions.
“The experience itself was engaging across the board and gave a tiny snippet as to what life would be like working in the city,” says J.T. Anderson '25, an economics major and data analytics minor. “The trek opened up many eyes to the reality of working in finance and necessary measures that need to be taken, such as the importance of networking, selling yourself and building a technical skill set. This program narrowed down my options for a future career and introduced me to people who want to help me get there.”
“I think it is important for our students to see that not only can they compete with graduates of business schools, but their liberal arts education often gives them an edge,” says Associate Professor of Economics Evren Damar, who attended the trip. “I think the students on this trip benefit from learning all the different aspects of the financial industry and finding out that there is not a single ‘finance job’ or a single path for pursuing a career in finance.”
Common themes of the trip were the importance of critical thinking and seeing the bigger picture, things HWS faculty make sure their students focus on, says Damar. “This is yet another reason why I think our students interested in a career in economics or finance can have all the tools they need to distinguish themselves in a crowded and competitive field.”
