6 October 2023 • Athletics Heron Society Celebrates 40 Years
Funding celebrates four decades of athletic society.
On February 6, 1983, the Heron Society was formed to increase the visibility of William Smith College through the support and promotion of athletics. Since then, gifts to the Heron Society have helped and supported hundreds of student-athletes.
In honor of the 40th anniversary of the Heron Society, the Heron Society Board of Directors seeks to increase the William Smith Athletics Endowment fund to support William Smith athletics.
“Your support for the William Smith Athletics endowment will grow this permanent resource for all of our athletes,” says Kerry McCullough Brown ’87, the Heron Society Board of Directors president. “Giving to this endowment creates an important legacy for all William Smith athletes. The endowment will forever strengthen our successful Peak Performance Plan, provide practice gear for our teams, professional development for our coaching staff, investments in technology around recruiting, scouting, film analysis and streaming and other Heron Society initiatives.”
The total raised will be announced at the Hall of Honor event on Saturday, April 27.

Founded in 1983 to celebrate the many student-athletes and coaches who bring increased recognition to William Smith College for their individual and team accomplishments, the Heron Society works to support the entire athletics program with financial assistance, to increase visibility for William Smith athletics and to promote camaraderie among William Smith graduates, parents and friends.
Over the years, Heron Society members' generosity has helped fund various purchases, including video equipment, practice apparel and team-specific equipment. The Heron Society also underwrites the Peak Performance Plan, a web-based recruiting program, recruiting cars, and much more.
