29 August 2023 Vesei Welcomed as HWS Library Director and Librarian
Hobart and William Smith Colleges name new Director of Warren Hunting Smith Library.
Charles “Chuck” Vesei is passionate about libraries. As the newly appointed library director and librarian on campus, Vesei is especially interested in how the Warren Hunting Smith Library serves as the campus’ intellectual hub.
“I love being an academic librarian because of the direct impact libraries have on the campus academic culture. I am especially energized by how the Warren Hunting Smith Library has served as an “intellectual crossroads” between student learning, faculty research and teaching, and engagement with the broader community,” says Vesei, who served for more than two decades at Baldwin Wallace University in Ohio.
As Baldwin Wallace University’s library director since 2018, he oversaw the planning and launch of the library’s first strategic plan, in addition to a website redesign, two renovation projects and a significant facility overhaul of the university’s archives.
Vesei earned his master’s degree in library and information science from Wayne State University. He also holds a master’s degree in Central Eurasian studies from Indiana University Bloomington and a bachelor’s degree in history from Michigan State University.
Provost and Dean of Faculty Sarah Kirk welcomes Vesei to the Colleges. She shares that she is thrilled to have him settled into the role for the start of the Fall semester.
"We are delighted to have Chuck join the Warren Hunting Smith Library," Kirk says. "His extensive experience in academic libraries has allowed him to accelerate in his new role and continue the mission of the Warren Hunting Smith to provide exceptional service and assistance to our campus community. We are excited for both the enthusiasm and vision he provides.”
Vesei looks forward to connecting with students and sharing how the library can support them during their undergraduate and graduate journeys.
“The library is more than just a large building that’s open to all. Don’t be afraid to ask questions,” says Vesei, urging the campus community to seek assistance. “No one is expected to wade through the complexity of navigating all the library’s print and digital resources on their own, which is why we have a fantastic library staff available in person, by phone, via email, and live chat on our website. No question is too small and no question is too big!”
