11 April 2024 Students to Intern at Bloomberg By Colin Spencer '19
HWS juniors will learn what it takes to succeed in finance while gaining firsthand knowledge of Bloomberg L.P.
Four Hobart and William Smith students will spend 10 weeks this summer at Bloomberg’s New York City headquarters getting exposure to the world of finance and learning about the Bloomberg Terminal, the software that powers financial data, news and trade services.
Luke Aquaro ’25, Grace Covelli ’25, Patrick Healy ’25 and Matthew Perryman ’25 will serve in the sales and analytics departments, learning about the services both departments provide, along with knowledge about the company and its culture. The four will also work on group projects and presentations.
“I am beyond excited and grateful to have such an amazing opportunity like this,” says Aquaro, an economics major. “Through networking with multiple alumni at Bloomberg such as Andrew Brennan '09, Kelsie Worth '22 and Matthew Fox '19, I was able to learn so much about what Bloomberg is about, the culture of the company, and the difference I can make in the world with Bloomberg. I could not be happier.”
“Having the opportunity to work with new people from various backgrounds with diverse perspectives excites me the most, allowing me not only to learn new things about finance and tech within the internship, but from the people I’m surrounding myself with,” says Healy, an economics and management and entrepreneurship double major.
Aquaro, Covelli and Perryman learned about the internship while attending the New York City Finance Career Trek last year led by the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education.
Healy learned about internship through Hobart Basketball Coach Stefan Thompson ’13, whose former teammate, Joseph Gibbons ’14, worked at Bloomberg. The two connected and Healy liked what he heard about the company’s sense of belonging.
“Since I met Joe, he has always spoken very highly of Bloomberg and how it’s a company that he feels a sense of belonging and togetherness at,” says Healy.
The sentiment was felt by the other students, too.
“Every HWS alum I was able to talk to from Bloomberg only had amazing things to say about the company,” says Perryman, an economics and international relations double major.
Covelli says talking to alumni like Brennan and Gibbons was a “great and relatable experience” as they helped walk her through the application and interview process for the internship.
“It’s very clear this company cares about their employees and wants them to succeed,” says Covelli, an economics major. “Bloomberg has a really good work-life balance while still being one of the best financial technology companies in New York.”
The students credit their liberal arts education with preparing them for the opportunity. Aquaro and Healy say HWS has helped develop their time management, critical thinking and communication skills necessary to succeed in the world of finance. Perryman notes his HWS education also introduced him to a variety of cultures and backgrounds and helped him build relationship skills.
All four are members of the Finance Society, where, Covelli says, she continues to learn about Wall Street and financial news.
Aquaro and Perryman are members of the Hobart Hockey team, which won the NCAA Division III National Championship in 2023. Aquaro is an assistant captain on the team and was a member of the Orange Key honor society as a sophomore.
Covelli is a member of the Theta Phi Alpha sorority and co-president of the UNICEF club. She also works at Ventosa Vineyards.
Healy is a member of the Hobart Basketball team that won the Liberty League Men’s Basketball Championship in 2024.
