21 March 2024 • Alums Thank You, Ten: Celebrating HWS Theatre

Join HWS Theatre to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the department and two centuries of theatre at HWS.

April 2024 marks the 10-year anniversary of the creation of the Theatre Major and the establishment of the Theatre Department at HWS. But theatre and performance have been part of the curricular and extracurricular experience of students since the earliest days of Hobart College. To mark the occasion, the Theatre Department is hosting a two-day celebration event in conjunction with the final production of the HWS Theatre 2023-2024 season. Thank You, Ten: Celebrating a Decade as a Department & Two Centuries of Theatre at HWS will be held Friday and Saturday, April 12-13.

The name “Thank You, Ten” is a play on words, taken from the calls that stage managers issue to actors and crew. They might say, “ten minutes to places” and the company responds, “thank you, ten” as a means of acknowledging they have received the call and are ready for what’s next.

Thank You, Ten includes an array of events:

  • Alumni panel of Theatre professionals
  • Tour of Theatre spaces
  • Frame/Works pre- and post-show panels on the spark (and struggle!) of artistic creation
  • HWS Theatre production of Icarus and Amelia Earhart Had Tea This Morning by Lizz Mangan
  • Closing Night Celebration with food, drink and dancing!

Returning to campus to discuss their professional work in Theatre are Producer, Director and Writer Russell Kaltschmidt ’84, Manager of Patron Relations for Atlantic Theatre Company Clare McCormick ’17 and Casting Professional Gail Quintos ’17. Attendees will have an opportunity to tour the Theatre spaces in the Gearan Center for the Performing Arts as well as Williams Hall. During their free time, returning alumni are encouraged to visit Bartlett Theatre to see how it has been repurposed for use as an event space and lounge.

The 2023-2024 HWS Theatre season closes with Icarus and Amelia Earhart Had Tea This Morning by Lizz Mangan. Icarus flew too close to the sun. Amelia Earhart flew beyond our reach. Isaac and Amy just want their art to take off. All four characters find themselves lost in a wilderness of their own creation, searching for someone else to provide a map out. Fighting self-sabotage and the desire to run – or fly – away from problems, these characters discover a way home to themselves. Icarus and Amelia Earhart Had Tea This Morning runs April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 13 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. and is directed by Professor of Theatre H. May. Please note: This production features adult content and language and is not recommended for young audiences.

In conjunction with Icarus and Amelia Earhart Had Tea This Morning, the Frame/Works series returns on Friday, April 12 with a pre-show panel of HWS faculty and staff artists who will share what sparks their artistic creations and how they maneuver through moments of struggle. Following Friday night’s performance, a post-show panel of student artists will share their experiences with making art that transcends disciplinary boundaries.

Thank You, Ten culminates in a closing night celebration with food, drink and dancing in McDonald Theatre. All events are free and open to current and former HWS Theatre students, faculty, and staff. Learn more and register for events here. Tickets for Icarus and Amelia Earhart Had Tea This Morning should be reserved in advance through the HWS Theatre Box Office. Questions?
