4 November 2025 • Alums Dr. Harvey Guttmann ’75 Honored at Jefferson Abington Hospital
In recognition of four decades of leadership and care, Jefferson Abington Hospital has named its GI Procedure Suite for Dr. Harvey Guttmann ’75.
Jefferson Abington Hospital in Abington, Pa. has named its new GI Procedure Suite in honor of Dr. Harvey Guttmann ’75, recognizing his more than 40 years of service as a gastroenterologist, chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, president of the hospital’s 1000 physician medical staff and board member.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place this summer, also celebrating Guttmann’s retirement.
Watch a tour of the new Dr. Harvey Guttman GI Procedure Suite here. In the video, Guttmann reflects on how the new suite will allow patients to receive care closer to home.
At Hobart and William Smith, Guttmann majored in chemistry, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and was a Martin David Levine Memorial Scholarship recipient.
“Hobart provided me with my educational springboard and I am so grateful for making the choice to attend,” he says. “I was the first person in my family of Holocaust survivors to pursue a degree in higher education.” Recalling his first visit to campus, Guttmann says he took a midnight Greyhound bus alone from New York City to Geneva for his interview. “Despite the short visit, I fell in love with the school and its potential opportunities. I took the chance on an entirely new world for me, and I never looked back.”
After graduating summa cum laude, Guttmann says the strong educational foundation he received at Hobart propelled him to finish at the top of his class at Cornell Medical School. He completed his residency at Cornell then a fellowship in gastroenterology at Yale University.
A gastroenterologist since the mid-1980s, Guttmann built a reputation for excellence in patient care and leadership. He is known not only for advancing medical technology used to treat GI issues and expanding services at Jefferson Abington but also for the relationships he cultivated across generations of families.
Guttmann is also an engaged member of his community. He has served on the executive board and board of trustees at Beth Sholom Synagogue in Philadelphia, where his service provided “grounding” and a “consistent infusion of emotional strength and gratitude,” throughout his storied career.
An HWS supporter, Guttmann and his wife Marlane are members of the HWS Wheeler Society, which recognizes individuals and families who have established a planned gift.
