13 June 2025 Igniting Global Futures: Five Students Awarded with Salisbury International Internship Stipend

Funded by the Charles H. Salisbury Summer International Internship Stipend, students get on-the-ground experience abroad.

This year, five students have received the Charles H. Salisbury Summer International Internship Stipend, enabling them to explore diverse careers, from finance at Formula One in London to healthcare in Seville.

Juliza Ariza ’27, Callum Letters ’27, Loreine Mungcal ’26, Kateryna Romaniuk ’26 and Stephanie Ryan ’26 were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants to fund their summer work in Spain, Greece, England, Sweden and Argentina.

HWS offers $15,000 Salisbury awards to support lodging and expenses during students’ international internships.

Created in 2007 by Honorary Trustee and former Chair of the Board Charles H. Salisbury Jr. ’63, P’94, L.H.D. '08, the Salisbury Stipend is considered a “mini-Fulbright” and the most ambitious internship program in HWS’ history.

“The Salisbury Stipend continues to be one of the most transformative opportunities we offer students at Hobart and William Smith,” says Executive Director of the Salisbury Center for Career, Professional and Experiential Education Brandi Ferrara. “With the generous support provided by the late Mr. Salisbury, our students gain access to international internships that align directly with their academic interests and long-term career goals. These immersive, real-world experiences not only broaden their global perspective but also give them a competitive edge as they prepare for life after college.”

A biochemistry major, Ariza’s career goal is to become a psychiatrist—a profession in which Hispanic women represent less than 2 percent, she notes. The Hispanic community tend to perceive mental healthcare as a sign of weakness, Ariza points out in her application essay. She wants to address those challenges in her career.

In Madrid, Spain and Athens, Greece, Ariza will spend 20 hours a week shadowing physicians in various hospital environments. “Understanding how physicians communicate with diverse patients, navigate complex situations and make critical decisions are of particular interest to me,” Ariza says.

In May 2024, Ariza completed a study abroad program: Management 212 Social Enterprise in Berlin, Germany.

An economics major, Letters will return to Formula One in London, where he worked for two months last summer managing and developing new business partnerships. This summer, Letters moves from the commercial to finance division to work on financing projects, building new partnerships and brand collaborations.

Letters says he intends to learn as much as he can at his dream company. Following graduation, Letters’ goal is to move to London to work full-time at Formula One. “I have watched Formula One since 2012, and I am a massive fan of the sport. For this reason, I am incredibly passionate about my work there, and I am very excited about being a part of the future direction of the sport.”

Letters spent this spring in Budapest, Hungary for a study abroad program in finance.

Kateryna Romaniuk '26

A biology and public health major, Mungcal will work in Seville, Spain, where she will intern in Clinica Santa Isabel, extending her education in public health systems and cultural praxis of care with the ultimate aim of becoming a midwife.

Mungcal says, “I am intrigued to see how this experience in Seville can help me answer the questions we always explore in my public health courses in HWS: ‘What is health?’ ‘What does it mean to be healthy?’”

Mungcal will be building on her experience abroad. She spent three weeks last winter in the Dominican Republic through HWS’ J-term program.

Mungcal is a Posse Scholar from Los Angeles, Calif.

An economics, communication and media studies major, Romaniuk is working for 10 weeks in KPGM Sweden’s risk and compliance consulting department in Stockholm. Romaniuk has been focusing on international firms such as KPMG to explore European job prospects. Last fall, she studied in Prague, Czech Republic, where she earned an international certificate in finance.

Stephanie Ryan '26

Majoring in educational studies, and French and Francophone studies, Ryan looks to expand her international teaching experience this summer in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There she will work as a teaching assistant on her path to becoming a multilingual English teacher.

Ryan is accumulating real-world practice outside the classroom. She spent this spring designing and implementing English language curriculum for refugee students in Grenoble, France.

“Each international setting where I teach will give me unique insights that build upon my experiences,” Ryan says.
