The Herons’ Iberian experience.

For nine days this summer, the William Smith volleyball team traded familiar routines for an experience that stretched far beyond the court.

The Herons' first international trip took them across Spain and Portugal, where they competed against international opponents while exploring the history, culture and communities that define the Iberian Peninsula. Organized in partnership with Off the Groove, the tour combined athletic competition with opportunities for cultural exchange and personal growth.

While William Smith played three matches during the experience, some of the most meaningful moments came afterward. Following each contest, players shared meals and conversations with their opponents, discovering common ground despite differences in language and geography.

"Spending time with the opposing teams after games was probably my favorite part of the trip," says Delainy Williams '28. "There might be an ocean separating us, but there's so much that makes us similar and connects us." 

Away from competition, the Herons immersed themselves in local culture. They hiked Portugal's dramatic Algarve coastline, explored Seville by bicycle, participated in a Spanish cooking class, learned flamenco and toured the historic streets of Granada before concluding their journey in Lisbon.

"What made this trip so special was the variety of experiences," says Lily Wittgraefe '29. "Every excursion taught us something different about what makes each place unique. It was a lot bigger than just volleyball."

The journey also strengthened relationships within the team as players and coaches navigated new places and experiences together.

"Our first international trip was a defining moment for William Smith volleyball," says Head Coach Derryk Williams. "The greatest value came from the cultural experiences and relationships we built along the way. The lessons we learned about connection, perspective and community will have a lasting impact on our program."

As the first overseas trip in program history, the experience offered more than international competition. It challenged students to engage with new cultures, broaden their perspectives and experience firsthand how sport can build connections across borders.

The William Smith volleyball program is coming off its most successful season in program history. The Herons had a program-best 24-8 overall record, securing a spot in the NCAA tournament for the second straight season after advancing to the Liberty League title match for the third time. William Smith captured its first NCAA tournament win in program history as it rallied to defeat Lynchburg 3-2 in the first round.
