William Smith ice hockey dedicates January 31 contest to the fight against cancer.
The William Smith Herons will host Buffalo State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 31, in the Cooler. Designated as Hockey Fights Cancer Night, the game will raise funds in support of the American Cancer Society’s mission to advance cancer research, support patients and caregivers, and promote prevention efforts.
The team has partnered with local businesses to offer raffle prizes, including donations from Kindred Fare, Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria, Geneva Gelato, Em’s Threads and more. Raffle tickets are $2 each and will be available for purchase at the Cooler on game day. Additionally, contributions can be made here.
Hockey Fights Cancer Night was launched in 2024 by William Smith hockey alumna Emily Rourke ’24, the founder of Em’s Thread’s Inc., and quickly became a meaningful tradition for the program. The inaugural event raised more than $6,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year’s game continues that legacy, emphasizing the broader impact of sport and community support.
Heron Colleen Quirk ’27 says Hockey Fights Cancer is a reminder that hockey is about so much more than what happens on the ice. "Every player, every family and everyone in this community has been touched by cancer in some way. On Saturday at 7 p.m., we are playing for something bigger than ourselves. The empty seats in the stands will represent the lives taken by this devastating disease — and the people we continue to play for, remember, and honor — including those still fighting with courage and strength every single day," she says.
The Herons have hosted several cause-driven games this season, including a Morgan’s Message game promoting mental health awareness organized by Quirk and a toy drive led by Fiona Gallagher ’26 benefiting the Geneva Center of Concern.
"There are no words to express my gratitude for the donations we are receiving. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society and we hope to benefit at least one person’s health or even bring them the slightest bit of joy. All of it counts; I am so grateful to do this with my teammates by my side," Quick adds.
Fans are encouraged to attend the Jan. 31 matchup, support the Herons and contribute to the fight against cancer. All raffle proceeds will be donated, and additional contributions can be made here.
