On Jan. 18, HWS and the Geneva community marched to honor the life and service of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Members of the Hobart and William Smith community joined President Joyce P. Jacobsen and the Geneva community for the 50th anniversary of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Memorial Service on Monday, Jan. 18. The event was organized by the Geneva MLK Committee.

Marchers gathered at the Geneva Public Safety Building and processed to Geneva City Hall and Bicentennial Park, the site of the citys Dr. Martin Luther King monument. Some of the days' speakers included New York State Senator Pam Heming, Reverend Donald Golden and Reverend Theresa Jackson of Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church and president of the Geneva, N.Y. chapter of the NAACP Lucile Mallard L.H.D. 15.

In conjunction with the MLK National Day of Service, the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) encouraged students to participate in virtual or socially distanced service opportunities.

"As the impact of the virus is further understood on communities locally and throughout the country, everyone will be called upon to do what they are able. In the words of Martin Luther King, everyone can be great, because everyone can serve," Director of CCESL Katie Flowers says.
