2 July 2019 Hauslauer '19 Earns Fulbright to Malaysia
Loretta Hauslauer '19 is the recipient of a 2019 U.S. Student Fulbright Award to Malaysia, where she will begin an English Teaching Assistantship in January 2020.
A sociolinguistics major and Spanish & Hispanic studies minor, Hauslauer is also enrolled in the HWS Teacher Education Program, with a concentration on teaching English to speakers of other languages. Inspired by her passion for languages and education, she applied for the Fulbright program to "live and work in a rural setting where I can develop a strong sense of community among my students, their families and other educators. I am eager to understand the ways in which ethnic and religious tolerance and unity are manifested in Malaysia's diverse education system and to develop and learn skills that will help me to establish my own inclusive English language classroom in the U.S."
Hauslauer hopes the Fulbright will offer valuable preparation to teach English to speakers of other languages in public schools in the U.S. upon her return.
"Specifically," she says, "my hope is that my time in a Malaysian classroom and in the Malaysian education system will give me an outside perspective on those in the U.S. I hope to use my cross-cultural experiences in Malaysia, where I will be in collaboration with other educators, to develop a strong understanding of myself as a teacher and multicultural ambassador both in and outside of the U.S."
As a student at HWS, Hauslauer has been named to the Dean's List and is the recipient of the Finger Lakes Scholar Scholarship and Virginia Henneberry '73 Endowed Scholarship. She studied abroad in Ecuador and Peru in 2017 and has served as a research assistant for Assistant Professor of Education Audrey Roberson. A member of the Geneva Women's Assembly, Hauslauer is a graduate of the HWS Leads Certification program and has been a tutor for the Boys & Girls Club of Geneva and a mentor on the HWS campus for first-year and international students.
Hauslauer is one of six HWS students to receive at 2019 Fulbright Award. Profiles of the other 2019 recipients will be published on the HWS Update throughout the spring semester.
The Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's flagship international exchange program. Created in 1949, the program is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the U.S. and numerous nations around the world. Participants are chosen for their academic merit and leadership qualities, and are given the opportunity to study, live, teach and conduct research abroad for one year in order to exchange ideas and seek solutions to shared global concerns.
In 2018, for the third year in a row, Hobart and William Smith were recognized as one of the nations top colleges and universities with the most recipients of U.S. Fulbright Student Awards.
