12 February 2021 Join the Community Conversation: MLKs Life and Legacy
As part of Black History Month, on Monday, Feb. 15, the Colleges will host a conversation about the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. featuring members of the Geneva community.
Members of the Hobart and William Smith and Geneva communities will gather virtually on Monday, Feb. 15 to remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Join the Zoom at 6:30 p.m. here. Sponsored by the Office of Intercultural Affairs and as part of programming to celebrate Black History Month, the event will be facilitated by Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Khuram Hussain.
Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning Katie Flowers will introduce the event's guest speakers. "Every year, in coordination with the MLK committee, CCESL hosts a Day of Service that brings HWS students and staff to local churches, parks and institutions, strengthening our bond with the Geneva community," Flowers says.
The Beloved Community: HWS and Geneva Remember Dr. Kings Life and Legacy features guest speakers Lucile Mallard L.H.D. '15, president of the Geneva chapter of the NAACP, and Rev. Donald Golden, president of the Geneva MLK Committee, which recently marked the 50th anniversary of the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Memorial Service.
Mallard is the resource coordinator for the Canandaigua City (N.Y.) Court system, where she is responsible for Finger Lakes Drug Court, the adult treatment court program which provides alternatives to incarceration for drug offenders. She has served as president of the Geneva chapter of the NAACP for more than 25 years and is a member of Geneva's Martin Luther King Jr. Committee. Mallard also serves as an advisee to ONYA, the Ontario/Yates Fund for Women and Girls and is a member of the Geneva Chapter of the League of Women Voters. In 2013, she was awarded the Community Service and Humanitarian Pursuits Award, one of the most prestigious awards a non-judicial employee of the Unified Court System can receive for her involvement in community service and humanitarian pursuits. The Colleges' awarded Mallard with an honorary degree in 2015 for her significant service toward improving the public good at the local and national levels, and for serving as a powerful role model to HWS students.
Golden is a pastor at Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Geneva, N.Y. He has served as chairman of the Board of Community Unified Today (C.U.T) and president of African American Men's Association. He is the current President of Geneva MLK Committee providing yearly outstanding leadership in the observance of MLK Day in the City of Geneva and working to serve area youth by providing financial scholarships to college. Golden was recently recognized by the Geneva Rotary Club as the Paul Harris Fellow award recipient. He is the guiding minister/chaplain of the Ontario County Justice Coalition and a member of the Geneva Area Interfaith Council.
