President's Medal
Wayne G. Atwell '61
Wayne Atwell '61 was a member of the Hobart and William Smith team that became the undefeated champions of the G.E. College Bowl in 1961. The victory brought national attention to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and is attributed for raising both donor interest and prospective students' attention.
Before attending Hobart College, Atwell served as a member of the Army Security Agency, defending the principles of freedom and democracy through his efforts interpreting foreign communications. After being discharged at the rank of Corporal, he attended Hobart where he distinguished himself in academics. Majoring in European History, Atwell was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and was involved in fencing, the German Club, Little Theatre and the International Relations Honor Society.
After attending the University of Connecticut's Graduate School of Business Administration, Atwell managed the pension and welfare plans for the employees of the GTE Corporation of Stamford, Connecticut, eventually becoming Director of Benefits Planning.
With a seriousness of purpose, Atwell worked to preserve the history and memory of fellow Army Security Agency heroes as a charter member of the National Army Security Agency Association.
