Marcia Berges Hodges '61
Marcia Berges Hodges '61 was a member of the Hobart and William Smith team that became the undefeated champions of the G.E. College Bowl in 1961. The victory brought national attention to Hobart and William Smith Colleges, and is attributed for raising both donor interest and prospective students' attention.
With Hodges' strong interest in literature, she graduated summa cum laude from William Smith with a bachelor's degree in English, with honors. After being inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, she went on to earn a master's degree in English from Cornell University and then attended the University of Rochester. Realizing a lifelong goal, Hodges served as a professor of literature at Wilmington College and Lane Community College.
Dedicated to the art and science of narrative, today Hodges is a noted storyteller, sharing folk tales with school children as a means to teach literature and story mechanics. Delighting children while also teaching them, her powerful stories have activated countless imaginations.
As an educator, Hodges works with fellow teachers, imparting her expertise in the art of storytelling while also communicating pedagogical theories and methods for using storytelling as a teaching tool in the classroom. Through her passionate pursuit of storytelling and unremitting commitment to education, Hodges has made an indelible difference in the lives of many.
