Spring 2021 Opening – Hobart and William Smith Colleges \
Fall 2020 Opening

Hobart and William Smith are excited to welcome students, faculty and staff back to campus for the spring 2021 semester. The Colleges will follow a schedule for the spring that tightens the semester in order to limit travel to and from campus once students have returned. Spring 2021 semester classes will begin one week later than originally planned, on Monday Jan. 25. We will forego a spring break week, and conclude classes on Friday Apr. 30, followed by a reading period May 1-3 and final exams May 4-7. Campus will remain open throughout and, based on information faculty have provided to the registrar, the majority of classes will begin as in-person, with some hybrid or remote.

Campus housing and dining will reopen Jan. 16 for all students. All students will be asked to either submit proof of recent (within 4 days prior to arrival) COVID testing or take a test upon return to campus. If a student has been diagnosed with COVID-19 on an earlier test and subsequently been cleared to leave isolation by a medical professional, we will take that evidence as sufficient to return to campus and forgo initial testing. All students will then be tested again on-campus prior to the start of classes on January 25. Additional details about the arrival process and testing regimen will be sent in early January. There will be orientation activities in the days immediately preceding classes for those students who are beginning at the Colleges in January.

Answers to frequently asked questions have been categorized and provided below. If you have questions that are not addressed, please email them to Spring2021@hws.edu.

In conjunction with the New York State Department of Health and the Ontario County Public Health Department, Hobart and William Smith will make an FDA-approved vaccine available to students, faculty and staff as soon as possible. Once vaccines are administered across the campus community and have time to take effect, all classes and co-curricular programming will pivot to an in-person model. Information and details will be emailed to the campus community as soon as possible.
