Weekly Note and Testing Center Hours

Good Morning,

We write after a snowy and successful weekend. On Saturday evening, we held the annual Alger L. Adams ’32 Academic Excellence Award Dinner that brought together members of the HWS community in recognition of students’ achievements and to honor the legacy of The Rev. Dr. Alger L. Adams ’32, D.D. ’83, the first Black graduate of Hobart College. Last night, students, faculty and staff gathered at a fire pit on the Quad to remember the life and work of bell hooks who spoke at the Colleges in the 1980s, a tribute that aligns with three reading groups happening on campus around hooks’ work. Finally, school spirit was in full effect on Saturday night when the Hobart hockey team beat Elmira in the Cooler. The team now advances to the quarterfinals where it will take on the top-ranked Adrian College in Michigan next Saturday. It was great to see so many people engaged in the life of the Colleges. Special congratulations to the Awards Scholars and to our student athletes.  

Whether you are traveling or staying in Geneva to rejuvenate, we hope you are looking forward to the upcoming Spring Break. There are important updates to the COVID-19 Resource and Testing Center’s hours to accommodate Spring Break needs:

  • The Center is open this week on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for asymptomatic testing from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (PCR and rapid anti-gen tests). 
  • The Center is also open this week on Friday, March 18 from 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon for rapid, anti-gen tests only. If you require a PCR test for travel purposes, it can take up to 48 hours for results to post to your account, so please plan accordingly. 
  • The Colleges have a supply of at-home, rapid tests available for distribution during the Testing Center’s open hours (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.; Friday 9:30 a.m. – 12 noon).
  • The Testing Center will be closed the week of March 21. 
  • The Center will hold special hours on Monday, March 28 (9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) for those requesting a return-to-campus rapid anti-gen test. The Center will resume its regular hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) for PCR and rapid anti-gen tests. 

As always, students experiencing symptoms should visit the Hubbs Health Center for an appointment. 

As of this morning, 13 students are in quarantine or isolation. If a student reports an at-home positive test to the Colleges, we work with that student for their quarantine and isolation needs, and those cases are reported in the Colleges’ dashboard. All HWS administered tests are automatically reported directly each evening by the Broad Institute (for PCR tests) or Finger Lakes Health laboratory to Ontario County. At-home tests reported to the Colleges are manually reported to the County by the Campus Life staff. Any student in isolation who was reported to us is in our case count and a deans’ notice is sent.  If students are self-reporting they are positive, and a faculty member did not receive a deans’ notice, please forward that information to CampusLife2@hws.edu or the students’ Dean so we can ensure the student is placed into isolation appropriately. Please note the Hubbs Health Center is diagnosing other illnesses, such as strep and flu, which may be impacting our students.

The Dashboard will be updated through Friday of this week, and then resume reporting on March 28. We will send our next weekly message on that date as well.
