- On Tuesday, students walk past the statue of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell. In 1849, Blackwell graduated from the medical school of Geneva College (Hobarts precursor) as the first woman in the country to receive a medical degree. (Geneva College was renamed Hobart Free College in 1852 and Hobart College in 1860.)
