hobart and william smith colleges

A Message from Board of Trustees Chair Tom Bozzuto

Dear Members of the Hobart and William Smith Community,

I am writing with news regarding the presidential search. As you are aware, Professor Emeritus of Economics Patrick A. McGuire L.H.D. ’12 agreed to serve as our interim president in April while we conduct a national search. Since then, he has done a masterful job of maintaining the Colleges’ forward momentum, overseeing a joyous and beautiful graduation week and an equally delightful Reunion weekend, and most importantly provided a strong sense of shared vision to our community.

I have traveled to Geneva on a number of occasions in the past few weeks, most recently for Reunion, and am very proud of the work that is happening on campus. Our community is vibrant, our students are incredibly impressive, our faculty is wholly committed to advancing scholarship and teaching, our staff is working with diligence and focus, and our alums and parents are fully engaged in our future. We have decades of exceptional momentum behind us as we begin this presidential search and I am very confident in our ability to attract an exceptional leader.

I am pleased to announce that the Vice Chairs of the Board of Trustees – Cynthia Gelsthorpe Fish ’82 and Andrew G. McMaster Jr. ’74, P’09 – will serve as co-chairs of the search committee. Their first task is to recommend a search consultant firm for approval of the Executive Committee of the Board. Cyndy and Andy are currently interviewing firms and expect to have a recommendation in the coming weeks.

Joining them on the committee are:

  • Trustee Aileen Diviney Gleason ’85,
  • Trustee Craig R. Stine ’81, P’17 and
  • Trustee William T. Whitaker Jr. ’73, L.H.D. ’97.

Elected from the faculty:

  • Assistant Professor of Psychology Sara Branch,
  • Assistant Professor of Political Science Justin Rose,
  • Professor of Physics Donald A. Spector and
  • Professor of Dance Cynthia J. Williams.

Appointed members of the staff are:

  • Catherine J. Williams, Vice President for Communications and Marketing,
  • Deborah L. Steward, William Smith Director of Athletics and
  • Louis H. Guard ’07, Vice President and General Counsel.

Student representatives are:

  • Trustee Caitlin E. Lasher ’19 and
  • Trustee Edens D. Fleurizard ’20.

Helping to coordinate the search from HWS will be Sonya Williams, Vice President for Human Resources.

Serving on the search committee is a significant time commitment and I am extremely grateful to this group for their dedication to the Colleges. I am especially pleased that the individuals selected represent the diversity of our community’s perspectives and opinions. I am certain they will represent the breadth and distinctiveness of the Colleges with sophistication and integrity.

Details on the search process and opportunities for campus-wide participation will be conveyed through Cyndy and Andy moving forward. It is our intention that the search process be as inclusive as possible, incorporating the feedback of all members of our community, while providing the utmost confidentiality in order to ensure the widest possible and most qualified pool of applicants.

Finally, I end with my gratitude. Over the past weeks, many of you have shared your reflections and ideas with me. Your engagement – passionate, compelling and thoughtful – has helped me and the Board tremendously and we look forward to our continued collaboration.
