Using Custom Virtual Backgrounds with Zoom

How to Download HWS Backgrounds for Zoom on a Desktop Computer

  1. Right-click an image on this page and choose Save image as….
  2. Save the image to your computer.
  3. Repeat for as many images as you’d like to download.

How to Add a Custom Background in Zoom on a Desktop Computer

  1. Download the Zoom desktop client.
  2. Sign in to the Zoom desktop client using your HWS login credentials. (See below for additional instructions.)
  3. Open the Zoom desktop client.
  4. In the upper-right corner, click your profile icon.
  5. Click Settings.
  6. In the left-hand menu, click Virtual Background.
  7. Under Choose Virtual Background, click the + icon, and then choose Add Image.
  8. Navigate to where you downloaded the HWS backgrounds.
  9. Click on the background you want to upload and then click Open.
  10. If a popup appears asking you to download Smart Virtual Background package, click Download.
  11. From the grid of images, click the one you’d like to use.

How to Download HWS Backgrounds for Zoom on an iPhone

  1. Navigate to https://www2.hws.edu/zoom-backgrounds/.
  2. Touch the image you’d like to save, and choose Add to Photos.
  3. Repeat for as many images as you’d like to download.

How to Add a Custom Background in Zoom on an iPhone

  1. Download the Zoom app.
  2. Open the app and choose Sign In.
  3. Sign in using your HWS login credentials.
  4. In the bottom menu, click Meeting.
  5. Once you are in a meeting, in the bottom-right corner, click More.
  6. Click Virtual Background.
  7. Click the + icon, and then choose the image you would like to add.
  8. Click Done.
  9. Click Close to return to the meeting.

Note for Android phone users: Custom virtual backgrounds are not currently available for Android phones.

To Log In With HWS Credentials

When logging in to Zoom, you may see a screen indicating SSO Login Required. If so:

  1. Click Login with SSO.
  2. If asked for your company’s domain, enter hws.
  3. You will be redirected to an HWS login screen. Enter your HWS credentials (your email address and password).
  4. You may be asked to verify your credentials. Once you’ve done so and you are logged into the system, you will be redirected to the Zoom desktop client or phone app.
