FEDERALLY FUNDED NEED-BASED AID

The Federal Pell Grant is available to U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens enrolled in an eligible undergraduate degree or certificate program on a full- or part-time basis. Students must also make satisfactory academic progress, must not be in default on a Federal Family Education Loan, nor owe a refund on a federal grant. Up to $6,895/year can be awarded.

The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is available to U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens enrolled in an eligible undergraduate degree or certificate program on a full- or part-time basis who are Pell grant recipients. Students must also make satisfactory academic progress, must not be in default on a Federal Family Education Loan, nor owe a refund on a federal grant.

HWS FUNDED NEED-BASED AID

HWS Grants are for students whose demonstrate financial need that is greater than federal, state and HWS merit awards, if applicable. Awards vary. Rectory Grants are awarded to the son or daughter of a member of the clergy. The amount is variable.

The HEOP Program is geared toward students who demonstrate financial need and meet the economic and educational eligibility criteria of the program. The awards are variable.

STATE FUNDED NEED-BASED AID

The Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) is for U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens who are also New York residents enrolled full time at a New York college or university. Awards for range from $500 – $5,665. Students must make academic progress to continue to receive TAP.

You will see an estimated TAP Award on your HWS financial aid offer letter, however final determination of awards is made as a result of the completion of the NYS Aid Payment Application each year and funding levels are dependent on the passing of the New York State Budget.

Students eligible for New York State Academic Excellence and New York Lottery must complete the TAP application even if they are not eligible for New York State TAP due to their New York State net taxable income.

The Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) is for New York residents attending a New York college. The student must demonstrate financial need and meet the economic and educational eligibility criteria of the program. The program provides up to an HEOP award of $5,632/year for the 2022-23 academic year. This award amount is determined annually in accordance with state funding levels.

Other State Grant Programs

States other than New York may also provide grants for student residents of their respective states who engage in out-of-state study. Vermont, Rhode Island and the District of Columbia, for example, offer assistance that can be used at Hobart and William Smith. Students should contact their state agencies for more information.
