Podcast highlights the HWS community’s response during the early days of the pandemic.
A study authored by HWS faculty, staff and students is in the spotlight again as “GovLove,” a podcast focused on local government produced by Engaging Local Government Leaders, recently hosted a conversation about the findings.
In August of 2020, the International Journal of Community Well-Being published an article online describing acts of resiliency and creativity from members of the HWS community that spring. Following the article’s print publication in December of 2021, two of its coauthors, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurial Studies Craig Talmage and Associate Professor of Anthropology Christopher Annear, joined Emma Falkstein ’21, Community Development Program Manager for Blueprint Geneva on “GovLove” to discuss how HWS and the City of Geneva were affected by and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The study, “Rapid Community Innovation: a Small Urban Liberal Arts Community Response to COVID-19,” was a collaboration between Talmage, Annear, Kate Equinozzi ’23, Director of the Center for Community Engagement and Service Learning (CCESL) Kathleen Flowers, Grace Hammett ’20, Assistant Director of CCESL Amy Jackson, Associate Professor of Psychological Science Julie Newman Kingery, Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Robin Lewis, Associate Professor of American Studies Kirin Makker, Audrey Platt ’21, Travis Schneider ’21 and Caroline Turino ’20.
Other related work co-authored by Falkenstein, Talmage and Annear includes “On the Ground, But Not in the Field? The (Mis)use and Portrayal of Ethnography in Community Development Literature” which was published in Community Development (2022). Currently under review, Falkenstein and Annear are working to publish “Building in Stories: Narratives in Community Development Human Organization.”
