8 May 2023 Inaugural Scholarship Day of Donors Tops $650K

The HWS community came together for a record-breaking 24 hours of fundraising in support of scholarships on May 2 and 3.

The inaugural Scholarship Day of Donors set a giving day record for the most Annual Fund support in a single day. Alums, parents, faculty, staff, students and friends gave more than $650,000 in support of Annual Fund scholarships. In the fall of 2023, up to 125 students will receive a Scholarship Day of Donors Annual Fund Scholarship, thanks to the support of everyone who gave during the challenge.

The fundraising total includes a challenge gift of $50,000 from John A. Manley ’64, P’93, which matched the first $50,000 raised dollar-for-dollar, as well as a challenge from Charles and Carolee Jones P’18, P’22, providing an additional $50,000 when the donor goal was achieved.

“Our incredible community once again turned out in support of our students and the unparalleled, relationship-rich education at Hobart and William Smith,” says President Mark D. Gearan. “Thanks to the generosity of the Colleges’ worldwide network, we are able to support more scholarships, ensuring that students who would benefit greatly from living and learning here can afford to do so.”

On May 2, National Teacher Appreciation Day, students gathered in Scandling Campus Center to write notes to faculty members who had a profound impact on their education at Hobart and William Smith. Donors could do the same on the virtual gratitude wall on the SDOD giving page.

In total, the day saw $651,418 given by 554 donors, totaling 110% of the donor goal.

“This was an amazing day of support for Hobart and William Smith. It is clear from the enthusiasm from donors that we have a remarkable community that knows the value of the teaching and learning happening here on campus, and the impact that it prepares students to have on the world after graduation,” says Vice President for Advancement Bob O’Connor P’22, P’23. “Thank you to all who given. Your dedication to the Colleges is having real, tangible effects every day.”
