The Hobart and William Smith Wind Ensemble will present “Beyond the Sheltering Sky” on Friday, Nov. 22. at 7:30 p.m. in the Vandervort Room.
In the first of its two annual concerts, the Hobart and William Smith Wind Ensemble will perform “Beyond the Sheltering Sky,” a collection of songs on triumph, dreams and tranquility. The concert is free and open to the public and features pieces ranging from baroque to contemporary by Samuel Barber, Johann Sebastian Bach, John Mackey, Ralph Vaugh Williams, Roland Barrett and Raymond Birch.
“I am beyond grateful to share the stage and direct this amazing group of talented musicians,” says Wind Ensemble Director Steven Zugelder.
The ensemble comprises students, faculty, staff and members from the surrounding community offering a diverse repertoire composed for wind ensembles.
The students performing include Leonardo Bonacci ’27 and Aspen Suwyn ’25 on euphonium; Grace Cheney ’28 and Colleen Jump ’27 on flute, William Hogan ’28 on tuba; and Payton Kliesch ’25 on percussion.
Local musicians include Cornelia Johnson on flute; Bob Gusciora and Lillian Wright on tenor saxophone; Steve Held and Mary Widomski on alto saxophone; George Barden on euphonium; Steve Jones and Vicky Porter on Oboe; Wendy Kain on trombone; Deborah Scharf on French horn; and Arthur Agnello, Phil Brach, Jannelle Bradshaw and Dan Isak on trumpet.
Zugelder earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Music Performance and Music Education from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester. He has taught as a band director in the West Irondequoit Central School District for 24 years and at Nazareth University for 12 years. He performs as a freelance trombonist in the Rochester area.
